Missing your train or changing travel plans is a common occurrence for Bangladesh Railway passengers. Understanding the refund process — and the rules governing cancellations — can save you significant money. Here is what you need to know.
For e-tickets (purchased on eticket.railway.gov.bd): Cancellation and refund requests must be submitted through the same portal where you purchased the ticket, under "My Tickets" > "Cancel Ticket." Refunds are processed to the original payment method. Key rules: (1) Tickets cancelled more than 24 hours before departure receive a refund minus a 10% service charge. (2) Tickets cancelled within 24 hours but before departure receive a 50% refund. (3) No refund is issued after the scheduled departure time. Refund processing typically takes 7–14 working days to credit to your bank card or mobile wallet.
For counter tickets (purchased at station): Physical tickets can be surrendered at any Bangladesh Railway booking counter. Bring the original ticket and your NID. The same 24-hour rule applies: full refund minus service charge if cancelled more than 24 hours before departure, 50% refund if cancelled within 24 hours. Refunds for counter tickets are paid in cash at the station.
For bKash or Nagad payments: Refunds from online cancellations to mobile wallets are typically faster — often within 3–7 business days. Ensure your wallet number matches the one used at purchase.
What if the train is cancelled by Bangladesh Railway? In cases where Bangladesh Railway cancels a service due to operational reasons (floods, track damage, cyclone), affected passengers are entitled to a full refund without deduction. Submit a refund claim through the e-ticket portal or at the station counter with your ticket.
Important note: Ensure you cancel your ticket before departure if you cannot travel — even if you cannot get a full refund, a partial refund is better than forfeiting the entire ticket value.
