Ekota Express was introduced to provide reliable passenger services to Dinajpur, the most economically important city of the greater Rangpur–Rajshahi north-western zone. Dinajpur's agricultural output, particularly its fine-grained aromatic Kataribhog and Chinigura rice varieties, makes it strategically important to Bangladesh's food economy. The train name "Ekota" (Unity) was chosen to emphasise the integrative role that rail transport plays in uniting Bangladesh's diverse regional populations under a shared national identity.
