Parabat Express (Train No. 709) is the premier intercity train connecting Dhaka with Sylhet, Bangladesh's spiritual and tea-garden capital in the northeast. "Parabat" means "mountain pigeon" in Bengali — an apt name for a train that journeys toward the highlands and verdant tea-estate country of Greater Sylhet. Operating over a distance of approximately 320 kilometres, the train is the flagship Dhaka–Sylhet service and the most popular train among Sylheti passengers, which includes a significant Bangladeshi diaspora community visiting from the UK and other countries. The train offers Snigdha (AC), AC Berth, Shovan Chair, and Shovan classes, accommodating a wide range of travellers. The journey takes passengers through Brahmanbaria and the lush Srihatta region, with glimpses of rivers, haor wetlands, and the first hints of rolling landscapes as the train approaches Sylhet. Parabat Express is considered the gold standard of Dhaka–Sylhet rail travel.

Train History (ইতিহাস)

The Dhaka–Sylhet rail line has historical roots in the colonial era, originally serving the tea industry of Greater Sylhet. After Bangladesh's independence in 1971, the route was rehabilitated and modernised. Parabat Express was introduced as the premier service on this corridor, named to evoke the mountainous terrain and natural beauty of the Sylhet region. The Sylhet corridor is unique in Bangladesh railway history because of its strong diaspora connection — millions of Bangladeshis of Sylheti origin living abroad use this train during visits to their ancestral villages, making it culturally significant beyond its transportation function.
