The Eurail Pass is one of the most flexible and popular ways to explore Europe by train. Available to non-European residents (Europeans use the similar Interrail Pass), it provides unlimited rail travel across 33 European countries on a single pass. Whether you are backpacking through the continent or planning a luxury rail holiday, understanding how the Eurail system works can save you significant money and time.

There are several pass types to choose from. The Global Pass covers all 33 countries and is available in continuous formats (15 days, 22 days, 1 month, 2 months, 3 months) or flexi formats (4, 5, or 7 travel days within 1 month). A 4-day flexi pass starts at around EUR 261, while a 1-month continuous pass costs approximately EUR 604. One-Country passes are also available for focused trips within a single nation — popular options include France, Spain, Italy, Germany, and Scandinavia.

One critical aspect that catches many travelers off guard is seat reservations. While the Eurail Pass grants you access to the rail network, many high-speed and international trains require a mandatory seat reservation — typically costing EUR 10-33 per train. This includes TGV trains in France, AVE in Spain, Frecce in Italy, Eurostar (London-Paris/Brussels), and most night trains. However, regional and intercity trains in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Benelux countries, and Scandinavia generally do not require reservations, making them ideal for spontaneous Eurail travel.

To activate your pass, simply scan the QR code on the Eurail Rail Planner app on your first day of travel. The app also serves as your trip planner, showing train schedules, reservation requirements, and allowing you to add journeys to your itinerary. Paper passes are no longer issued — everything is managed through the mobile app.
