The Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) has released a progress update on the MRT Line-6 extension from Motijheel to Kamalapur Railway Station, confirming that construction is now 78% complete as of February 2026. This crucial 1.16-kilometer extension will connect the Dhaka Metro system directly with the Bangladesh Railway mainline terminal at Kamalapur, creating a seamless multimodal transport hub for millions of commuters and long-distance travelers.

The Kamalapur Metro Station, which is being built as an underground station beneath the existing railway terminal complex, will feature four entry and exit points, escalators, elevators for disabled passengers, and a climate-controlled concourse level. The station design includes direct covered walkways connecting to Bangladesh Railway platforms, allowing passengers to transfer between metro and intercity trains without leaving the station complex. DMTCL officials stated that track laying for the extension is complete and electrical and signaling work is currently underway.

Once operational, the extension will dramatically reduce travel time for passengers arriving at Kamalapur by intercity trains who need to travel to other parts of Dhaka. Currently, passengers must rely on buses, rickshaws, or ride-sharing services to reach destinations in Uttara, Mirpur, Farmgate, and other areas along the MRT Line-6 corridor. With the metro connection, a passenger arriving from Chittagong on the Subarna Express could reach Uttara North within 40 minutes of alighting at Kamalapur. The full extension is expected to begin commercial operations by December 2026, pending successful trial runs scheduled for October.
