The Nilsagar Express (Train 753 Dhaka–Nilphamari; Train 754 Nilphamari–Dhaka) is one of Bangladesh's great long-distance intercity journeys — a 400-kilometre+ rail adventure that takes passengers from the capital across the plains of northern Bangladesh, through some of the country's most historically and agriculturally rich landscapes.
The train is named after the Nil Sagar (Blue Ocean) — a large ancient lake in Nilphamari district, believed to have been created during the Pala dynasty era (8th–12th centuries CE), now a national archaeological monument. The lake, oval-shaped and covering approximately 23 acres, is surrounded by flowering trees and is a picturesque destination in its own right.
The journey from Dhaka to Nilphamari takes approximately 8–9 hours. Major stops include: Sirajganj (junction point after crossing Jamuna Bridge), Bogura, Joypurhat, Rangpur, Saidpur, and finally Nilphamari. Each of these stops offers a window into a different facet of northern Bangladesh's culture and economy.
Bogura stop highlights: Bogura (approximately 4 hours from Dhaka) is the commercial capital of northern Bangladesh and gateway to Mahasthangarh — one of Bangladesh's most important archaeological sites, with fortifications dating back to the 4th century BCE, the oldest of its kind in Bangladesh. Bogura is also famous for its mishti doi (sweet yoghurt) — considered the finest in the country. The platform vendors at Bogura station sell this yoghurt in traditional clay pots.
Rangpur city (approximately 6 hours from Dhaka) is the divisional capital of northern Bangladesh — a growing commercial hub known for tobacco cultivation, potato production, and Boro paddy farming. The city's Tajhat Palace (a gem of early 20th century Bengali architecture) and Rangpur Zoo are worth visiting.
Saidpur (approximately 7 hours from Dhaka) is home to Bangladesh Railway's largest workshops — the Saidpur Railway Workshop, originally built in 1870 during British colonial rule, still employed in maintaining rolling stock. Saidpur Airport connects to Dhaka for those needing faster return travel.
Ticket recommendation: For this 8–9 hour journey, Snigdha class is strongly recommended over Shovan Chair. Book at least 7–10 days in advance.
