About This Journey
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, affectionately known as the "Toy Train," has been chugging through the misty hills of West Bengal since 1881. This narrow-gauge marvel climbs from New Jalpaiguri at 100 meters elevation to Darjeeling at 2,200 meters, covering 88 kilometers through breathtaking tea plantations, pine forests, and mountain villages.
The railway was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999, recognized as an outstanding example of a hill passenger railway. The iconic blue and red steam locomotives still run on select services, offering a living experience of 19th-century engineering. The famous Batasia Loop, where the track spirals around itself to gain altitude, provides panoramic views of the Kanchenjunga range.
