About This Journey
The Ghan is one of the world's great train journeys, traveling 2,979 kilometers from Adelaide on the southern coast to Darwin in the tropical north — the entire length of continental Australia. Named after the Afghan cameleers who once traversed these harsh desert routes, the train takes approximately 54 hours with off-train excursions at Alice Springs and Katherine.
Passengers witness the landscape transform from the green farmland of South Australia, through the rust-red desert of the Outback and the dramatic MacDonnell Ranges near Alice Springs, to the tropical wetlands of the Top End near Darwin.
